E.ON’s involvement also brings on board round the world yachtswoman Dame Ellen MacArthur who will be the campaign champion. Ellen is already working with E.ON to help raise awareness of how their business customers and the wider community can become more energy efficient, through making simple changes – a message emphasised in the 100 Days Campaign.
Run by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), the 100 Days Campaign aims to help participants realise the carbon saving potential of their workplace, encouraging staff behavioural changes and managerial initiatives to reduce carbon emissions from their buildings. With the support of E.ON, and Ellen MacArthur, CIBSE hopes this campaign will build on the success of the 2006 initiative and lead to bigger and better carbon savings.
CIBSE President John Armstrong said: “It is excellent news that E.ON is sponsoring the 100 days campaign. CIBSE and E.ON share common values of promoting and encouraging sustainability, helping organisations to work towards an energy efficient future.”
E.ON has already reduced its carbon intensity by 20% since 1990 and is committed to reducing it by another 10% by 2012. The company is also aiming to spend £1bn on renewable generation in the next five years.
In commenting on E.ON’s involvement in the 100 Days Challenge, Peter Haigh, Director of B2B at E.ON UK said: “Businesses in the UK must take more responsibility to reduce their impact on the environment. By working with CIBSE on this campaign we hope to encourage our customers as well as the wider business community to take greater steps towards energy savings.
“We are also committed to reducing our impact on the environment, both from our electricity generation and our business operations in the UK. To help our customers do the same, we have set up a new business area - Sustainable Energy Solutions, which is focused on helping businesses reduce their impact through low carbon technologies.”
Ellen MacArthur said: “The 100 Days Carbon Off Campaign is an initiative I am very excited to be involved with. I see it as a significant step towards encouraging businesses to start taking action to improve their energy efficiency.
“I am passionate about learning all I can about how we can live and work having a lesser impact on our Planet. Working with E.ON is a major facilitator in the learning process, and gives more scope to really make a difference. In our business OC Group, we are making changes to be more energy efficient and I hope I can encourage many more businesses to take up the same challenge during this 100 Days Campaign.”
As part of the 2007 initiative a pre-campaign pilot study has been carried out - helping 20 participants from various sectors to take practical and cost effective measures to deliver real energy savings. The results from this pilot study will then be used to provide new and improved guidance for the second 100 Days of Carbon Clean up Campaign, running from 12th September to 20th December.
The 100 days run from 12th September to 20th December
