I did a talk for the Carbon Trust on my return which was a great experience. It’s wonderful to spend time around people who are clearly really motivated in the area of sustainability and encouraging people to live in a more sustainable way. It was one of the first real talks I had done with a strong focus on the resource management of a round the world voyage, and I found that the talk went very well. It hits me again and again just how carefully you have to manage things at sea, and the difference between being out there and being on land. It’s a really tough challenge to make changes in our lifestyles, but like getting over any hurdle, it’s hugely more worthwhile if you actually really WANT to do it….
I always try to keep my eyes open when I’m moving around and getting on with life, and a couple of things came to my attention whilst away. One was seeing a shepherd cutting peat for his fires in the winter, and wondering how sustainable that is...And another was meeting up with a friend of a friend who is currently sailing round Great Britain in a little 23ft boat. It brought back so many memories for me from my solo circumnavigation of our island, but also made me realise how much fun can be had around the coast of our country, and how, with careful planning, a little boat like that can travel such great distances! The brain rarely stops thinking… but then that’s not always a bad thing
